What Quilter's Are Saying
"I love that I don't have to make my own templates. The shapes are right there on the interfacing, so I can get straight to sewing."
"The dogs are so much fun to personalize with different fabrics. Everyone looks a little different."
"I wanted to try appliqué, but traditional templates felt intimidating. The Quiltsmart method made the process much more approachable."
What You'll Learn
With the Great Scott & Pups ZigZapps pattern, you'll learn how to:
- Make fabric dog and puppy appliqués using Quiltsmart's printed interfacing method.
- Sew around printed appliqué lines for consistent shapes.
- Trim and turn small appliqué pieces neatly.
- Fuse finished appliqués to a background fabric.
- Add simple details such as vests and decorative stitching.
- Mix fabrics and colors to create dogs with their own personality.
Quick Start
1. Choose your fabrics. Pick fabrics for your dogs, pups, vests and background.
2. Cut out the appliqué shapes. Separate the shapes you want to use.
3. Layer fabric to the wrong side of the interfacing shape and sew on the solid line. Stitch completely around the shape.
4 Trim on the dashed line. Clip curves and corners where indicated.
5. Cut a small slit in the interfacing ONLY. Turn and press. Turn the shape right side out and gently finger-press the edges.
6. Fuse to your background. Position your finished appliqué and fuse it in place.
7. Finish the edges. Use a zigzag, satin stitch or another favorite appliqué stitch.
Quiltsmart tip: A pointer-creaser can help create crisp edges, while a hemostat can make turning small pieces easier.
