"Judy's Simple Squares" (16-patch) uses printed interfacing to create 16-patch blocks combined with solid blocks.

Interfacing is free, using printed interfacing that can't be sold. There may be a variety of "seconds" printed interfacing in your package. Our goal is to keep it out of the landfill. You'll receive enough to make 2+ lap-size quilts IF you make the design that we show here. All you pay for is shipping.

Great for guilds and groups making charity quilts - as the blocks are likely to be a consistent size!

How to Make Judy's Simple Squares Quilt

Quiltsmart Interfacing:

Cut the interfacing into (18) 4 x 4 grids (not 4”, but 4 squares by 4 squares). Note: Your order will include enough "seconds" printed interfacing for two quilts -  for just the shipping costs.  There may be a variety of panels printed in the packet. If needed, you can fuse the grids together to get the best output. Simply overlap the grid lines and press with a pressing sheet - to protect your iron and/or ironing board.

You can also use the grids for potholders or mugmats (see photos above). If your packet does not include grid panels, you can also use this same method by fusing 16 squares to a section of interfacing, leaving a hair between them for folding. You would follow the instructions for grids at that point.

This layout finishes at 40” x 56”. Add borders and/or more blocks to make your quilt larger. Many charities have specific guidelines on the size they accept, so you might want to check with them first.

We invite you to watch the videos below, share them with your guild, family, & friends.

The Story Behind Judy's Simple Squares Quilt Pattern

Judy Cody and her sister, Ginger, sew shelter quilts, dresses, bags and more for those in need.

I (Mattie, Quiltsmart President) met Judy at QuiltCon and we became instant friends. She said her sister, Ginger, was from Bend - my town, too!!!! Needless to say, we all got together when Judy visited from Arizona...and there was love at first bite of our lunch!

Judy and Ginger have inspired me and other sewists to do the same giving - and they have ways to make it easy to sew and easy for groups to sew together! Let’s embrace these two amazing women and all our unsung heroes!

"Judy's Simple Squares" is a pattern designed by Judy & Ginger. When Judy was offered interfacing by Quiltsmart, she and Ginger came up with all kinds of patterns and designs (often not even what the original design was intended for!).  J

Judy & Ginger wanted to make it possible for guilds and charity organizations to use the interfacing to make shelter quilts, bags, etc. For example, it can be used for dress facings - anything that lightweight interfacing is used for.

To get the idea "out there" we decided to make up a pattern and include enough interfacing for "about 2" quilts. We have saved this interfacing for several years, just waiting for a great way to use it rather than add it to landfills!  The interfacing also helps the blocks be very much the same - so, when many people are making one quilt, you will get better results.

This is now available for anyone to use - you may pass this on to your guild, use as a group, or as individuals. We just ask that you pay the shipping and give it to someone in need.  If you place orders, we will happily include the pdf pattern for Judy's Simple Squares Quilt when requested (just write a note with your order.) The package will be about 1 - 2 lbs (that is more interfacing than you would think!).

Our main mission:  Quiltsmart wants to pass Judy's Simple Squares quilt pattern and usable interfacing to anyone who would like to help people in need, by completing quilts for those who may need the comfort, warmth, and love that a handmade quilt can bring.
